The Hotdisc chart is compiled from DJs and industry professionals’ ratings of songs currently being promoted on the Rush Released CD. They are not airplay charts, as airplay charts cannot work in Europe because there are no terrestrial country stations. The hundreds of country programmes on air which we service are likely to play a particular song only twice at most in a three month period, therefore rendering airplay charts insignificant in Europe. It works well in America where there are plenty of non-stop country stations but it does not work here. Any Airplay Chart you may see claiming to provide this service is bogus and Hotdisc does not condone these charts at all. They are misleading at best for the reasons stated.
The Hotdisc charts are put together weekly using ratings supplied by DJs who give scores to every song on the last three months’ editions of Rush Released. The scores are averaged out per week to give an accurate guide to the songs which are being championed by the industry. The aim is to showcase the songs which the industry professionals are flagging up as quality songs. This is a very useful exercise as it is free of politics, hype and rigging and done solely on merit!

Paul J. Schiminger
Executive Director of IBMA
International Bluegrass Music Association
Music Charts Magazine® from its beginning has sought to bring to you the truest history of music in different genres from industry professionals in all fields of music.
Big Al Weekley joined us as a Music Charts Magazine® partner not long after its formation. In the process he brought his love of Bluegrass music with him. With an encyclopedia of knowledge in Country, Bluegrass & Gospel music Big Al quickly updated us on the Bluegrass world, its history, and all it had to offer.
We since then have interviewed The Roys (www.theroysonline.com), Driven (www.drivenbluegrass.com), Mac Wiseman, Larry Sparks (www.larrysparks.com), Rhonda Vincent (www.rhondavincent.com) and so many others. It has been a joy to learn about Bluegrass music, its history, and its growing popularity across the world. Music Charts Magazine® with the guidance of Big Al started celebrating “International Bluegrass Month of May” three years ago. During the month of May we feature some of the best in Bluegrass DJ’s and the shows on which they work hard to share their love of Bluegrass. We have had the honor to work with Judith Burnette “Blue Ridge Backroads”, Darwin Davidson “BronzeWound”, Tim White “The Tim White Bluegrass Show”, Charlie Hall “Bluegrass Express” and of course Big Al Weekley “The Big Al Bluegrass Show”.
Big Al Weekley, who was a Top 5 Bluegrass Broadcaster of the Year at the IBMA Awards this past 2014, is honored to do this interview as his passion for Bluegrass music and its history is like that of Paul Schiminger’s.
Paul is a Certified Investment Management Analyst. With a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from James Madison University in Virginia, and a Master of Science in Finance from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland we know Paul Schiminger is up for his new job with the IBMA and along with his love of Bluegrass will fill the position and take the role to new heights.
Join Big Al Weekley and Paul Schiminger in this interview as they discuss Paul’s new career, his vision for the IBMA, and of course the 2015 IBMA Awards Show that will be held Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Memorial Hall in Raleigh, NC.
Paul is not just some financial wizard that crunches numbers all day.. he is a fan of Bluegrass music, he has a heart for Bluegrass music and he also has a love for playing Bluegrass music.
Don’t take it as a fact but we have heard rumors at Music Charts Magazine® that the last time Paul picked up a banjo he played so fast sparks flew off the strings and they burnt a small hole in the ozone layer. We figure that’s just more rays of sunlight Schiminger is letting in to shine on the IBMA.

Ask your radio station to hear Whitney McClain’s song “Bombs Away”. – It’s a great tune!
Who is Whitney McClain?
Whitney McClain is destined for greatness…not stardom, because that is fleeting, but greatness because that defines one’s legacy. She’s now taking her destiny in her own hands with the help of some very special people in her life with the release of her first single, “Bombs Away.”
Born and raised in the Willamette Valley area of Oregon, she grew up in a family that loved and appreciated music. Her uncle, Marlon McClain, is the former leader and guitarist for the 80’s funk/rock/R&B/jazz band Pleasure. Whitney credits him with inspiring, encouraging and guiding her to take this giant leap and releasing her first single at the tender age of 21.
“I have such fond memories of singing and putting on little shows for my family when I was a kid,” states Whitney. “Even during some very difficult times, it was music that soothed my soul and helped me to heal.”
The difficult times Whitney is referring to are two brain surgeries that she had in both the 5th and 7th grades. Both surgeries were
delicate and with the love and support of her family and her faith in God, she not only recovered, she thrived.
After graduating from South Salem High School she headed to the University of Texas in Austin, a city known for its music. “I was drawn to the city of Austin with all of the music being played on every corner and I loved those southern manners,”she chuckles.
“Bombs Away” was written and produced by Mauli B. “So many of my friends are falling in love, falling out of love and trying to figure out how to pick the right guy,” comments Whitney. “When I heard this song it sounded like some of the late night talks I have with my girlfriends and I knew it was for me.”
“I know that being an artist requires a lot of hard work, time and patience,” she adds, “but I am ready.” I am blessed to have people like Mauli B. share their talents on this project. It was his encouragement along with his vocal team including Clotile Kepashvili that heard my voice and encouraged me to step out and go for it.”
“I want to share my story and my music in the hope that it will reach out and touch people and inspire them to overcome the hard times that can come up in life.”
“I am proof that dreams do come true and I know that I will continue to grow as a person and an artist as I take this first musical step.”
One only has to hear Whitney sing, see the glow in her eyes and feel the power of her spirit to know that she is on her way…..to greatness.

(Note- In the earlier edition today I left out Willie Ackerman, drummer.
This is in atonement for that mistake.)
When I first got to Nashville as a producer
Starday Records was the main country label,
and their recording studio was on Dickerson Road.
I had worked in studios in Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, and Miami,
but this was a whole new experience.
Some of the Starday artists were Red Sovine, Johnny Bond,
Willie Nelson, George Jones, The Willis Brothers, Minnie Pearl,
Dottie West, Kitty Wells, Johnny Wright, and Roger Miller.
I wrote and produced for several artists there in the 1960’s
and early 1970’s.
Our old friend Tommy Hill was the house producer,
and the studio musicians were Pete Drake: steel,
Jerry Shook: lead guitar, Jerry Smith: piano,
Willie Ackerman: drums, and Junior Huskey on acoustic bass.
Tommy Hill played rhythm guitar,
and the backup singers were The Hardin Trio,
with Ray King added to sing bass.
Buddy Spicher may have sometimes played fiddle.
and the engineer may have been Scotty Moore.
It’s been so long that I hope my memory is accurate.
In those days an artist or producer could do a session
at the Dickerson Road studio for $600 to $900..
This would cover the studio, the musicians and singers,
the engineer, and the studio time.
I had never seen musicians using The Nashville Number System
It was fast and accurate, and left space for improvisation.
Writing charts (sheet music) was my usual job, but not here.
We first played them a home made demo,
they made some symbols on yellow paper, and started playing.
It was better than anything I would have written.
My artists released singles and album material
on Starday, Starday-King, Gusto, and King labels,
all part of the Starday group.
A few of the sessions Misty and I produced at Criteria Studios
in Miami were also leased to Starday and King.
In the 1970’s, the Gusto label was doing re-recordings of hit records.
They featured the original artist, but not the original backup.
Misty and I were asked in to redo Tennessee Birdwalk and Humphrey the Camel.
The backup music was prerecorded by their staff people,
and we sang over it, like karaoke.
I said to Tommy, “The key sounds a bit higher than our original.”
He said, “A lot of older stars do these, and we raise the pitch
to make them sound as young as they did back then.”
We thought we sounded sort of chipmunky.
These cuts were billed as “Original Hits by Original Artists”,
but they weren’t very close to the original hit sounds.
Anyway, they will live forever at Walmart on labels like K-Tel.
I’ll always be grateful to Tommy Hill, Pete Drake, and Starday
for my early training in country music…
and to Junior Huskey for his friendship and moral support.
