Music Charts Magazine® History

– Song for the month of February 2015:

The Turtles “Happy Together

The Turtles - Happy Together

Happy Together” is a 1967 song from The Turtles’ album of the same name. Released in February 1967, the song knocked The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” out of the number one slot for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the group’s only chart-topper. “Happy Together” reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1967. The song was written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, former members of a band known as The Magicians. The song had been rejected a dozen times before it was offered to The Turtles, and the demo acetate was worn out.

The Turtles song Happy Together has been featured in many movies, including 1970’s The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart, 1983’s Heart Like a Wheel, 1987’s Making Mr. Right, 1987’s Ernest Goes to Camp, 1989’s Happy Together, 1988’s Naked Gun, 1994’s Muriel’s Wedding, 1997’s Happy Together, 2000’s Sorted, 2002’s Adaptation., 2002’s Cherish, 2002’s S1m0ne, 2002’s Bubble Boy, 2003’s Freaky Friday featured “Happy Together,” as well as a cover by Simple Plan, 2004’s Ma Mère, 2005’s Imagine Me & You, 2006’s documentary Blindsight, 2007’s Simpsons Movie, 2008’s 27 Dresses, and 2009’s Stepfather. Frank Alamo’s French cover of the song was featured in the 2010 movie Get Him to the Greek and Scared Shrekless. The song was featured in one of the trailers for the 2013 film The Great Gatsby. It also appears in the 2014 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, sung by one of the title characters who is a literal (though mutated) turtle.

In television, the song has been used in many episodes of The Simpsons including “The Way We Weren’t” and “Trilogy of Error”, and in episodes of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, That ’70s Show (sung by the cast in the episode “That ’70s Musical”), The Muppet Show (sung by guest star Florence Henderson with a set of Muppet Monsters and Frackles), Cupid (sung by Lisa Loeb), Scrubs, ER, The Wonder Years, and the My Name Is Earl episode “Faked His Own Death”.

In advertisement, the song was used in 1980s Golden Grahams ads. In 1999, the song was used for a Super Smash Bros. ad where Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Yoshi are fighting in a field of flowers. Toyota (Toyota New Zealand) used for its promotion of the Toyota Rav4 in 2006; the spot was made by New Zealand based Saatchi & Saatchi. In 2009, Ford used the song for the promotion of Ford Focus. The spot was made by Brazil based JWT São Paulo. However, the Ford commercial featured its “employees” singing the song while they designed and manufactured the car rather than the original version of the song recorded by The Turtles.

In sport, it is the official song of Melbourne City in Australia’s A-League.

The Hotdisc chart is compiled from DJs and industry professionals’ ratings of songs currently being promoted on the Rush Released CD. They are not airplay charts, as airplay charts cannot work in Europe because there are no terrestrial country stations. The hundreds of country programmes on air which we service are likely to play a particular song only twice at most in a three month period, therefore rendering airplay charts insignificant in Europe. It works well in America where there are plenty of non-stop country stations but it does not work here. Any Airplay Chart you may see claiming to provide this service is bogus and Hotdisc does not condone these charts at all. They are misleading at best for the reasons stated.

The Hotdisc charts are put together weekly using ratings supplied by DJs who give scores to every song on the last three months’ editions of Rush Released. The scores are averaged out per week to give an accurate guide to the songs which are being championed by the industry. The aim is to showcase the songs which the industry professionals are flagging up as quality songs. This is a very useful exercise as it is free of politics, hype and rigging and done solely on merit!

JACK BLANCHARD'S COLUMN at Music Charts Magazine®

When I got that colonoscopy in October
they found my car keys, a pair of dice, and a harmonica.

The music business was tough in the old days too.
Most of the unsigned artists and writers that walked Music Row
never got a chance.
I think we had an advantage
because I was an independent producer of other artists for 4 or 5 years
before Misty and I recorded together.
I knew some people.

In the 60’s we put a lot of stuff on our own little label, Zodiac,
and shopped the them around to radio stations and labels.
In 1967, a country DJ named Hoss Moss heard our “Bethlehem Steel” recording,
played it, and called Wayside Records, a label with national distribution.
They signed us for the four songs from our first Nashville indie session,
and that led to an album.
Wayside made a deal for distribution
and that’s how we wound up on Mercury Records.

We played a lot of Cavalcade of Stars country shows,
and were often asked to be the closing act,
because we did some other stuff the audience liked.
At The Garden State Art Center there were ten big names on the show.
Every act went overtime and they made us cut our show to 10 minutes.
That’s what the union demanded.
We were mad and so was the audience.
I’d do it all again.

We did a show at Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
Our hosts were Harden & Weaver, top DC radio personalities.
Their English comic counterparts, The Two Ronnies, were there too.
Also on the show was The US Navy Band!
Misty and had a lot of fun that day, even if we were outnumbered.

Starday Records was once a giant in country music, with a roster of superstars.
I was producing at Starday Studios in the 1960s,
when Willie Nelson was a writer there,
and not getting enough respect from the owner.
I wrote and produced for several Starday Records artists.
Also some for Pete Drake’s Stop Records.
Misty Morgan recorded a song on Starday under the name Maryanne Mail.
It was called “The Lonely Sentry”
and was on the Starday LP “Country Music Goes to War”.
The war at the time was Viet Nam.

Bill Littleton has died. He was a fellow writer,
and I admired his takes on music and life.
We were sort of pen pals, exchanging points of view,
which included the occasional argument.
As is true with all of my late cohorts, I miss knowing that he’s there.

We were having dinner with Major Schwab at the Shaw AFB Officers’ Club.
The waiter poured a tiny bit of wine in Misty’s glass for her to okay it.
She had such a disappointed expression!
Misty looked up at him and said, “Is that it?”

I just learned how many people uploaded our songs to YouTube.
Along with the songs we uploaded, we’ve had well over a million views.
Amazing, the money we don’t get!

Misty says Social Security is “Go away money.”
It’s “Here’s some money. Now go away.”

A LOVE SONG… “Fly Me to Your Room..”

A TROUBLED MARRIAGE SONG.. “You light up my wife”.

A LOVE SONG FOR WHEN YOU DON’T REALLY CARE ALL THAT MUCH…
“I get empathetic over you.”

VINTAGE CARS…
My ’47 Packard was the first car to have power operated seats. Great car.
Our ’64 Plymouth Valiant was the first car to have an alternater.
It was still a piece of crap.

A SIDE EFFECT…
Misty said, “All those inhalers are making you depressed.”
I said, “I get depressed when I can’t breathe.”

If I’ve ever accidentally written anything to offend radical Muslims,
I was only kidding. Haha.

I’m heading for the roundhouse.
They can’t corner me there.

JD Clarke is a special kind of guy.  Living in the Maritimes of Canada in the province of Nova Scotia JD Clarke has marked a name for himself.  JD can handle the job and does his job well.  Nova Scotia should be proud to call JD Clarke their own.  He can sing, write and play.  He is dang good at all three.  He has quality music that can play alongside the majors and you can experience this yourself by listening to this interview with three full songs mixed in it.  This is the first time that we at Music Charts Magazine® have featured three full songs in a New Discovery interview.  We just like JD that much.  Ladies be careful – there is a new cowboy in town.

JD Clarke - Country Music - Better Off Gone - Music Charts Magazine - NEW DISCOVERY

JD has performed with many artists here’s just a few: Taylor Swift, The Road Hammers, Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon, Dean Brody, The Stampeders, Jason Blaine, Sean Hogan, Duane Steel, Steve Fox, Beverly Mahood, Diane Chase, Bruce Guthro and amany more. JD has also performed at some amzing places such as The Daytona 500 50th Anniversary, Makawao Rodeo in Maui Hawaii. JD has performed at Festivals across Atlantic Canada as well as some major festivals out west such as Big Valley Jamboree.

JD Clarke grew up in the rural community of West Gore, nestled in the Rawdon Hills of Nova Scotia. It was against this backdrop that JD learned to write and play guitar at a young age, which in turn has led him to this very stage in his ever so promising career. JD, like so many other young and aspiring musicians spent most of his nights listening to his hero’s on his radio and on his record player – but JD says, “I wasn’t just listening, I was dissecting every sound, every note and every nuance of my favorite artists songs…trying to get inside them so that I could see, feel and hear what made them so great.” It was from those thousands of moments listening to those songs during his early youth that JD realized what he wanted to do with his life, and that was to play music for everyone and anyone that would listen. From that time on JD began writing intently and practicing relentlessly on his guitar, honing his skills into the notes of his own personal experiences that would lead him to this very moment in his life. JD’s years of personal passion and real life experiences (both good and bad) can be heard on such songs as the country-rock anthems, ‘‘What You’ve Got’ and ‘All That Matters’ to the Eagles tinged, ‘Wouldn’t That Be Nice’ and ‘Losing You’…to the power ballad potential cross-over smash, ‘Heaven and Earth’ – (all of which JD self-produced and performed all the instruments and vocals on). During JD’s relatively short and glimmering career he has already garnered 5 ECMA nominations including the ‘Rising Star’ and ‘Country Recording of the Year’ awards (‘I Hope You’re Satisfied’ – #20) and Top 100 Canadian Country Artists to Watch accolade, all of which has allowed JD and his music to be taken across Canada as well as parts of the US playing to sold out crowds and enthusiastic fans everywhere he goes. While having made a name for himself in North Eastern Canada and beyond and with a successful touring band behind him and a large catalog of self-penned songs already under his belt, JD’s biggest goal now is to find the right label partner to help propel his career to the next level so as to get his music in front of a bigger audience – a worldwide audience. As for JD’s musical comparisons, it may have been best described this way by a retired record man/fan; “JD’s music captures hints of that classic Eagles, Exile and Bellamy Brothers sound but with the current edge of a Keith Urban, all mixed together with JD’s vocals and solid songs and you get the end result of 100% authentic JD Clarke.” That is a pretty accurate description of JD’s music and one that he is proud to have.

JD’s music and reminiscently fresh writing style originates from the country roots of his heart, displaying songs that are filled with memorable melodies and relatable emotions from the real life experiences of one simple country man…and that man’s name is JD Clarke.

Grace Potter Duet Celebrates Women’s Free Spirit Following Two No.1s

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 3, 2015) – Kenny Chesney knew he wanted to take his music new places, explore different themes, but never lose sight of the people and places that shaped him. He spent 2014 focusing on his music – instead of staging one of his herculean stadium tours – and the result has already yielded the GRAMMY and triple Academy of Country Music nominated multiple week No. 1 “American Kids” and his 26th No. 1 “’Til It’s Gone,” as well as his 13th chart-topping Country Album The Big Revival.

With that ground broken, the songwriter/entertainer considers a woman’s place in country music today with the yearning Grace Potter duet “Wild Child.” Most added at country radio yesterday, Chesney thinks the song’s appeal is a very simple, but compelling reality.

“To me a girl who is so alive, so in the moment, so curious and hungry for life… there’s nothing like her,” Chesney says of the inspiration. “You can’t tie ’em down. So free… and so intense because of it. Nothing is more attractive. To me, that makes women really stand out. Whether they want to live in the mountains, become a doctor, play music in Hawaii or surf around the world, whatever their passion is, that’s what drives them – and man, it’s an amazing thing.

Beyond shifting the way women are currently portrayed in country songs – never the motivation for the yearning ballad that again pairs the 8-time Entertainer of the Year with hippie rocker Grace Potter – “Wild Child” provided a creative pivot for Chesney as he was working on The Big Revival. It reflected his own quests, his own drive to see new things in the music.

“I was writing ‘Wild Child’ with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, and it just clicked,” Chesney explains. “Certain songs start a creative landslide, and that was it. The idea of writing about a girl who is so hungry to see the world, she’s scared she won’t taste it all before she’s done… who loves so hard, but can’t be tied down… that put everything into place.”

“When you think of my fans, they are passionate people… about life, music, their friends and how they dig in when it’s tough as much as how they have a good time. I knew during the last tour, they were hungry for more from this music. They wanted more of their life the way they live it, maybe some different things musically. And I spent a lot of time trying to do that.”

The subtle shift has earned some high praise. USA Today called The Big Revival “a coming-of-age tale full of life-changing memories,” while Esquire.com wrote it “feels completely organic” and New York’s Newsday proclaimed, “(Chesney) really builds his vision of America… a big-tent collection of future hits that celebrates regular folks who stand up for each other. In turn, even more folks will stand with Chesney after hearing it.” Notoriously tough Rolling Stone opined the album “continuously brings a sense of musical energy and emotional urgency… His strongest collection of songs since 2010’s career-defining Hemingway’s Whiskey,” The Miami Herald deemed it, “Chesney’s most infectious collection in a long time.”

With Chesney’s 2015 The Big Revival Tour set to kick-off with a double at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena March 26-27, the man The Wall Street Journal called “The King of the Road” is getting ready to get back what he lives to do: connect with people through the music night after night. As “Wild Child” arrives at country radio, there’s plenty of new music to draw from – and plenty of songs to fuel a long hot summer.

Church takes stage alone with stomach bug sidelining band, crew, announces makeup day anyway

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – (Feb. 1, 2015) – Eric Church knows what a bummer it is to have your Saturday night plans ruined by a concert cancelation. So rather than pull the plug last minute on his show in Salt Lake City Saturday night after a stomach bug knocked out most of his band and crew, Church gave the crowd something special and promised them more to come.

“If you’ve seen our show so far on this tour, you’re probably wondering what the hell is going on right now. Well, so am I,” Church told the crowd. “Here’s the deal: Yesterday we had the stomach flu strike our band, our crew, everyone. We had no one to hang video, lights, nothing. But I’m still here. I’m still standing. We’ve talked about how every show on THE OUTSIDERS TOUR is different. Well, tonight will be the most different one. Shit there’s nobody left. It’s just me. I’m going to give you everything I got.”

He then announced he’d be back Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, with a full band, and launched into a mostly solo set alone on a stage built for eight with just his acoustic guitar. He gave his fans a stripped-down performance reminiscent of his days as a scrappy club performer. Back then, Church would give his band a break during their six-hour sets and hold the stage alone.

Church played acoustic versions of current hits “Give Me Back My Hometown,” “Drink In My Hand,” “Cold One” and his most recent No. 1 hit “Talladega.” He also played deep-cut favorites such as “These Boots,” “How ‘Bout You” and “Livin’ Part of Life” from early in his career.

Halestorm opened the show with a full 45-minute set. The production and stage were scaled back – only four spotlights and a minimal floor lighting package showcased Church in this unique setting. Guitar players Jeff Hyde, Jeff Cease and Driver Williams joined Church for a few songs and Lzzy Hale came onstage for a remarkable acoustic rendition of “That’s Damn Rock and Roll.” Church worked six mic positions (scaled back from the normal 14), still performing to every section of the 360-degree setup.

Saturday’s complete set list is as follows:

“Talladega”
“Drink In My Hand”
“Guys Like Me”
“How ‘Bout You”
“I’m Getting’ Stoned”
“Creepin’”
“Like Jesus Does”
“Cold One”
“Livin’ Part Of Life”
“Give Me Back My Hometown”
“That’s Damn Rock and Roll”
 “Before She Does”
“Homeboy”
“These Boots”
“Like A Wrecking Ball”
“Jack Daniels”
“Smoke A Little Smoke”
“Thunder Road”
“Springsteen”

Fans looking to experience Church’s prowess as a live performer have a unique chance to catch him at the GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 8 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The North Carolina native is up for four GRAMMYs, including Best Country Album and Best Country Song, and will play a yet-to-be-announced song on the CBS broadcast.

THE OUTSIDERS WORLD TOUR returns to the road on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California.

Supporting acts for the May 25 bonus show in Salt Lake City will be announced at a later date. Fans wishing to attend should hold onto all physical tickets. Those unable to attend that show can seek a full refund at point of purchase beginning Wednesday, Feb. 4, until 5 p.m. day of concert.

Tickets are available at www.ericchurch.com, all Smith’s Tix outlets, www.smithstix.com, the arena box office or by phone at (800) 888-TIXX or (801) 467-TIXX. To learn more about Church, visit www.facebook.com/ericchurch, or follow @EricChurch on Twitter.
