ON TV WITH JACKIE GLEASON.
I’m never tense during a live stage show.
I’m always a wreck on TV shows.
What makes the difference is this: Control.
At a stage performance we can instruct the sound guys,
get the equipment set up just right,
and have the lighting the way we want it.
And, most importantly, it’s our show.
We can read the audience and set the pace accordingly.
We’re in control.
On a TV show,
we have to stand on a tape mark that somebody else put there,
and usually I can’t hear myself sing
because the monitors are set for the normal human voice.
I don’t own a normal human voice.
For one thing, I sing lead in the bass range,
which most TV engineers don’t understand.
It’s somebody else’s show.
Some directors like you to play to the cameras, and some don’t.
They never tell you which.
In a show we did with Ralph Emery on TNN,
I was standing on my mark,
singing by the seat of my pants because I couldn’t hear myself.
When a camera red light would go on, I’d play to that one,
and the director would immediately switch to another camera.
I played eye tag with the cameras through most of the song,
and never won a round.
Misty is calm on TV.
Her voice can cut through a brass band.
She doesn’t care about the sound monitors,
because she can just sing louder.
I have often wanted to hide behind her.
She doesn’t concern herself with finding her tape mark on the floor,
but usually gets to it okay.
I’m like Sherlock Holmes looking for a clue.
To me, the worst was a show we did with Jackie Gleason,
Mike Douglas, and Frank Fontaine,
live from the Miami Beach Auditorium.
We had to show up for rehearsal at about noon.
We had special orchestra charts written for the occasion,
and we’d never heard them before.
While we were rehearsing,
Jackie Gleason and Mike Douglas were sitting in the fifth row,
watching us.
My tension started to build.
Then there was a four or five hour wait until the show started.
Plenty of time to relax, right? Wrong!
Plenty of time to get my panic into high gear!
We were backstage talking to Gleason
when he was introduced with a fanfare.
He stood behind the curtain for a hundred count
while the applause gained momentum,
then he walked briskly onstage.
He didn’t want to step on his applause,
and he didn’t want it to die down.
His perfect timing told him the exact second to make his appearance.
I was impressed.
Jackie Gleason wasn’t anything like Ralph Kramden.
He was intelligent and dignified,
wearing a dark blue suit with a flower in the lapel.
When Misty and I were introduced,
we walked briskly out from behind the curtain,
and she walked right past our mark to a wrong one
about eight feet farther front.
My panic gong rang. She didn’t even notice.
The directors and camera crew had to move fast to find her.
I had no choice but follow her to my doom.
I looked like cross-eyed rabbit caught in the headlights.
When I go into a real panic
my voice goes up into Dolly Parton’s range.
I have never sung worse, or looked stupider.
Misty and the orchestra sounded great.
The directors and camera crew looked at us with venom,
but I was the only one who noticed.
Misty still thinks the show went nicely,
so I’m alone in my embarrassment.
After we did our fiasco,
Jackie and Mike led the applause, and we sat down to talk.
This part was where I hope I redeemed myself
by debating spiritualism with Jackie Gleason for twelve minutes.
I let him win.
We have a videotape of it somewhere around here,
but I’ve just never felt up to looking for it.
I hate watching myself on TV.
I’d rather eat bugs than go through it again.

The Cains Trio, a sibling group from Hartselle, Ala., will be releasing their debut CD on Oct. 28. The album is called “Stay On Board”. I didn’t refer to it as their debut ‘country’ CD, because I’m not really sure in which genre’ this trio belongs. What I do know, is that they have put out some great music. The best way to describe the sound to you, is to use their words. They said they are a “combination of country, soul and pop to Americana, folk and contemporary Christian”. What I know, is that it is a good combination, and a refreshing new sound. Taylor, Madison and Logan Cain produce a quiet, mellow, soft sound. And, they use that sound to give us some great music!
Their bio tells us that they are much more than singer/songwriters – they are also multifaceted entertainers and musicians who play guitar, piano, bass, harmonica and more. It all started when eldest sibling, Taylor, learned her first song on the piano at 5-years-old, and a few years later began teaching her young siblings to sing harmony with her. Now, all Troy University graduates, the siblings are ready to show the world those harmonies and pursue their dream.
Most of the songs on the album are slow to mid-tempo. I think “Traveling Kind” was really the fastest song on the CD, and it’s not fast… not like some of the music out there today. But, it’s all good. Each song is different from the one before it, and every song is relaxing, yet thought-provoking. My favorites are “Say Less, Love More”, “Stay on Board,” and “Be Yourself With Me”. These are great lyrics, great melodies, without a doubt great harmonies – and everything needed to make a great album.
Here are the 10 songs you’ll hear on the new album: Be Yourself With Me, Smoke on the Hill, I’ll Take That Any Day, Someone Loves You, She’s My Girl, Fighting For Love, Beautiful Life, Traveling Kind, Say Less, Love More, and Stay on Board. Below is the press release about this new trip, and their new CD.

NOTHING IS OVER LIKE CHRISTMAS.
Nothing is over like Christmas.
Months of anticipation, and then it’s gone.
Try to hold on to it and it slides away like this morning’s dream.
It’s hard to work up the spirit here in Florida,
but we give it a shot every year.
Misty decorates a tree,
and puts Christmas stuff all over the place.
We listen to Christmas music with the air conditioning on
and with palm trees lurking in the yard.
I get sentimental about Christmas,
probably because I had real Christmasy holidays years ago,
with folks who are no longer with us,
and my childish subconscious thinks it will happen again.
I toss up futile prayers for snow here in the subtropics,
but this is the time of year when we get a cheap imitation of autumn.
A couple of trees around here get a touch of red,
and I go look at them.
Television doesn’t help, with reports of all night sales,
talking heads urging us to be good consumers,
stranded travelers sleeping in airports,
and carolers singing “Happy Honda Days”.
The people who tell us that it’s a pagan holiday,
just because it’s near the winter solstice,
may not realize what an intrusion that is upon our enjoyment.
We can each bring our own thoughts to the season,
and make it our personal non-pagan celebration.
It’s in the spirit of the beholder.
I think I’ll write a letter to Santa,
and ask him for one more snowfall in Buffalo,
where the night is silent, the homes are warm,
and Christmas is strong in the air.
Jack Blanchard.

The Hotdisc chart is compiled from DJs and industry professionals’ ratings of songs currently being promoted on the Rush Released CD. They are not airplay charts, as airplay charts cannot work in Europe because there are no terrestrial country stations. The hundreds of country programmes on air which we service are likely to play a particular song only twice at most in a three month period, therefore rendering airplay charts insignificant in Europe. It works well in America where there are plenty of non-stop country stations but it does not work here. Any Airplay Chart you may see claiming to provide this service is bogus and Hotdisc does not condone these charts at all. They are misleading at best for the reasons stated.
The Hotdisc charts are put together weekly using ratings supplied by DJs who give scores to every song on the last three months’ editions of Rush Released. The scores are averaged out per week to give an accurate guide to the songs which are being championed by the industry. The aim is to showcase the songs which the industry professionals are flagging up as quality songs. This is a very useful exercise as it is free of politics, hype and rigging and done solely on merit!

~ Music Charts Magazine®
Kayla Calabrese, country’s newest fierce full-blood Italian and hopeless romantic, brings presteige beyond her years to the present female country mold. This Jersey girl brings vulnerability, strength and determination along with the New Jersey spirit and attitude to her music.
“I didn’t grow up singing, I actually thought country music was not ‘cool’ ,” laughs Kayla. This ambitious girl had many different dream jobs from being a veterinarian, to a doctor, to even a police officer. Deep down this hopeful artist wanted to let her inner star shine, so any chance she got, this sly girl would grab her mother’s video recorder and tape herself singing, watch it, and erase it before anyone else for the chance to see it.
“One of my favorite singers is Martina McBride” smiles Kayla. “My mom and I went on a scavenger hunt to find some tickets to a Martina McBride show. We went all over Reading, PA and finally figured out that they were in a CVS. I ran inside and found the tickets behind some greeting cards. My mom and I started jumping up and down screaming. Some random people joined us and said, ‘We don’t know why you are so excited, but we are excited too!’ It was so much fun to find those tickets!”
At age 16 while in the Big Apple watching the original cast of Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre, Kayla’s secret dream became a reality. Captivated by the singing and pure joy that was shown through the performance, Kayla wanted to begin the chase for her dream. No longer bound by a secret dream Kayla asked her mother for voice lessons and at 17 the journey began.
Shortly after Kayla, her dog Abbie, and her country stardom dreams headed south to Nashville. With encouragement from Renegade Radio Nashville founder Captain Jack, Kayla mustered up the courage to seek help from renowned music producer Kent Wells (Dolly Parton, Neal McCoy). “Kent taught me so many things that I did not even realize I needed to know about music and recording.” recalled Kayla.
The process of producing Kayla’s first EP began in February of 2012 with getting her songs written. She finished writing her 6 song EP, the last song ‘Did You Feel That’ was finished at 11pm the night before she began. “I love how so many country songs tell a story, so I was excited when Kent wanted to put this song on the EP because it was my story-telling song.” said Kayla. After almost a year of production this self-motivated young woman has her first EP and her current single “Kiss Me” is currently on country radio.
In the midst of chasing her dream, this hard working and tenacious girl attended school at Belmont University. Along with school and singing, Kayla worked as a nurse’s tech at Baptist Hospital and as a gymnastics teacher. This past May, Kayla graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. She recently passed her state licensing exam, meaning she is Kayla Calabrese-RN!
Kayla’s dream nursing job would be to work in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She and her twin brother, Ryan, were both preemies. Weighing only 3lbs 9oz when she was born, Kayla has a soft spot for premature babies. Sweet-hearted Kayla loves knowing that she is making a difference in someone’s life and that is why nursing suits her well.
In her spare time, Kayla enjoys being outside. Growing up only 20 minutes from the beach she loves the water and the sand. She also enjoys living a clean and healthy lifestyle. Making sure she works out, eats several small balanced meals throughout the day, and drinking pleanty of water is very important to her daily lifestyle. Even though being healthy is important, sometimes this Italian girl likes to splurge on her favorite dishes. “If I go home for a visit the first thing I get to eat is thin crust pizza! I also love to go to Carmine’s in New York City for their raviolo dish!” Kayla also enjoys cooking her native Italian food. “One time I was making lasagna for my old boyfriend and myself and it didn’t exactly turn out like I thought. I had worked on it all day and was about to get it out of the oven when he asked ‘do you need some help?’ Being the independent person I am, I said ‘no’ and went to get the tin pan out of the oven. The minute I pulled the pan out of the oven it caved in and collapsed all over the floor. All I could do was laugh. We ate it anyway and it was delicious.”
Even though Kayla misses everything about home: her two brothers, her parents, the Jersey Shore, and her friends, Kayla knows that this move was exactly what she needed. “I’m an Italian country singer from New Jersey, that’s what makes me different,” smiles Kayla. Excited about continuing this journey, the dynamic vibrant country songstress is underway in making all of her dreams come true.

Music Charts Magazine® History
– Song for the month of January 2015:
Dean Martin – “That’s Amore“
“That’s Amore” is a 1952 song by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Jack Brooks. It became a major hit and signature song for Dean Martin in 1953. Amore (pronounced ah-MOR-eh) means “love” in Italian.
The song first appeared in the soundtrack of the Martin and Lewis comedy film The Caddy, released by Paramount Pictures on August 10, 1953. In the film, the song is performed mainly by Dean Martin, with Jerry Lewis joining in and then followed by the other characters in the scene. It received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song of that year, but it lost to “Secret Love” from Calamity Jane starring Doris Day.
The track that was used for the single released by Capitol Records was recorded on August 13, 1953, (Session 3098; Master 11694-6), with the orchestra conducted by Dick Stabile, at Capitol Records’ studios at 5505 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, California. On November 7, 1953, Martin’s record of the song, with “You’re the Right One” (which was recorded at the same session as “That’s Amore”) on the flip side, peaked at #2 on the Billboard charts. The song was kept from the #1 spot when Les Paul and Mary Ford’s Capitol Records single “Vaya Con Dios” returned to the #1 spot after being knocked out by Stan Freberg’s Capitol Records single “St. George and the Dragonet”, which had been #1 for the previous four weeks, after “Vaya Con Dios” had been #1 for the nine previous weeks.
