Veta Gardner sits down with Music Charts Magazine® and talks with us about her late husband Carl Gardner. The Coasters are a doo-wop group that started in October 1955. The original members of the Coasters were Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Bobby Nunn, Leon Hughes (who was replaced by Young Jessie on a couple of their early Los Angeles recordings), and guitarist Adolph Jacobs. Jacobs left the group in 1959. The Coasters’ were formed out of the group The Robins, a Los Angeles based rhythm and blues group, which included Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn.
The songwriting team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller had started Spark Records, and in 1955 produced “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” for the Robins (their 5th single with Leiber-Stoller). The record was popular enough for Atlantic Records to offer Leiber and Stoller an independent production contract to produce the Robins for the Atlantic label. Only two of the Robins—Gardner and Nunn—were willing to make the move to Atlantic, recording their first songs in the same studio as the Robins had done (Master Recorders). In late 1957 the group moved to New York and replaced Nunn and Hughes with Cornell Gunter and Will “Dub” Jones. The new quartet was from then on stationed in New York (although all had Los Angeles roots).
The Coasters’ association with Leiber and Stoller was an immediate success. Together they created a string of good-humored “storytelling” hits that are some of the most entertaining from the original era of rock and roll. Their first single, “Down in Mexico,” was an R&B hit in 1956 and appears (in a re-recording from 1970—still with Gardner singing the lead) on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. The following year, The Coasters crossed over to the national charts in a big way with the double-sided “Young Blood”/”Searchin’.” “Searchin'” was the group’s first U.S. Top 10 hit, and topped the R&B charts for 13 weeks, becoming the biggest R&B single of 1957 (all these were recorded in Los Angeles).
“Yakety Yak” (recorded in New York), featuring King Curtis on tenor saxophone, included the famous lineup of Gardner, Guy, Jones, and Gunter, became the act’s only national #1 single, and also topped the R&B chart. The next single, “Charlie Brown,” reached #2 on both charts. This was followed by “Along Came Jones,” “Poison Ivy” (#1 for a month on the R&B chart), and “Little Egypt (Ying-Yang).”

Harold Bradley has performed on hundreds of albums by country stars such as Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, and Slim Whitman. He has also performed on songs for the King of Rock -‘n’- Roll… Mr. Elvis Presley.
Country Music Hall of Fame, Musicians Hall of Fame, Nashville A Team, served as the president of the Nashville chapter of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) for almost 2 decades and was a recipient of the Trustees Award at the Grammy Awards.. this list goes on and on. Harold Bradley and his brother Owen Bradley altered the course of music history and they were the dawning of country and rock music and everything that Nashville is today. A Music Charts Magazine® Kitty Wells Radio Tribute with Big Al Weekley and Keith Bradford ( 16 year bass player, spokesmen and long time friend of Kitty Wells and Johnnie Wright ). Keith Bradford ( owner of KMA Records and NBRN.FM in Madison, TN ) was a pall bearer at both Kitty Wells and Johnnie Wright’s funeral.
Ellen Muriel Deason (August 30, 1919 – July 16, 2012), known professionally as Kitty Wells, was an American country music singer. Her 1952 hit recording, “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”, made her the first female country singer to top the U.S. country charts, and turned her into the first female country star. Her Top 10 hits continued until the mid-1960s, inspiring a long list of female country singers who came to prominence in the 1960s.
Wells ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of Billboard’s country charts, according to historian Joel Whitburn’s book The Top 40 Country Hits, behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1991, she became the third country music artist, after Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, and the eighth woman to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Wells’ accomplishments earned her the nickname Queen of Country Music.

Hollis Champion began his recording career as “Hollis Champion” in the late 1950s when he recorded “Old Red Devil.” Then he moved to Nashville in the early 1960s, developed a flare for comedy and adopted his flashy stage name, Elmer Fudpucker.
Over the years appearing as Elmer Fudpucker, Hollis has been the opening act for such diverse performers as Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Kenny Rogers, the Statler Brothers and Marty Robbins. His first break in the business came when Ernest Tubb asked him to open performances at fairs for him.

Who are they? They are.. “Angel Mary and The Tennessee Werewolves” Where did they come from? Who knows? You try to figure it out. They only come out at night so it’s hard to track them down. Bring back some old school country soul, add some rockin’ electric guitar, a mean beat, and mix it with a female singer that sounds like a child born from the womb of a Kentucky Headhunter on a moonshine mission and what do you get? You get ~ Angel Mary and The Tennessee Werewolves For those of you that know what in the box music means Angel Mary & The Tennessee Werewolves AKA (AMTW) are not it. They sit on top of the box, do circles around it and sometimes dig holes under it. The name is derived from Johnny Cash and his song the “Beast in Me ” from his American recordings. It sparked Angel Mary and The Tennessee Werewolves to record “Folsom Prison Blues,” a song they hold close to heart. Not only did AMTW record this new epic single at the Cash Cabin where the American recordings were recorded, they also had John Carter Cash co-produce the single and play an acoustic track on it.
